Sounds like a dream, but thanks to researchers from the University of Utrecht I can imagine this future! They work together with the University Medical Center Utrecht on catalytic materials, that can react with either indoor or outdoor light to photocatalytically degrade the pollutants, and they already successful destroyed Covid with it.
Cleaning air with catalytic materials is not new, in Japan they already use it to clean air. Big difference is that it happens outside with UV light. The researchers in Utrecht developed a material that works with indoor light, like LED.
To raise the chances of success they build the new paint from scratch. They want to avoid pitfalls of adding something new to existing paints, which often didn’t work for other ideas of creating new applications for paint.
Now the researchers will collaborate with Akzo Nobel, a company that creates paints and performance coatings worldwide, to develop the painting, and hopefully they can bring this product on the market in five to ten years.
